Is Your Home Hazardous To Your Childs Health?

 04 July 11:29

Your home more than any other place is probably where your child is likely to be injured. There are hazards in every room and hallway. Fortunately, most accidents to children in the home are preventable. As caregivers, we must know which hazards pose the most significant risk.

Electrical Sockets have always been a point of hazard in the home. This is especially true if there are small children present. An uncovered electrical socket invites trouble. You should always keep the sockets covered to prevent a child from placing items in it or their mouth on it. You must be vigilant of this and other hazards.

Unlocked cabinet doors pose a threat to curious youngsters. Cabinets that house chemicals and other potential hazards should remained locked. It only takes a few seconds for a child to find their way into trouble when the contents of a cabinet are exposed. Be careful to use locks that cannot be jiggled apart by the child. If the locks are weak they themselves can become the hazard.

Small items that can be swallowed are particularly hazardous. They can range from small toys to paper clips left lying around. Loose change found on the floor can choke a small child. Objects such as beads, if placed in the ear and nose can cause severe irritation. We must be aware that things which seem harmless are often the most harmful.

A Baby bed or crib can be hazardous. Ordinary items left in the childs bed can cause significant harm. A pillow in the bed could very easily suffocate a child who cannot maneuver well. The height of the childs bed is important to consider. Falling from a bed that is too high, is not only painful, but can cause severe injury. Carefully consider the design of the childs bed. Note whether the corners are sharp or smooth. Your attention in this and other areas will reduce risk to your child.

Appliances are another danger. They attract youngsters like ants to honey. Appliances are particularly hazardous. They make noise which fascinate young children. To young eyes they invite fun. Appliances can blind or cause loss of limbs. It is important to know what appliances in your home pose the most threat. A fan left plugged in could easily cut off a finger. Appliances present an obvious danger, but others may not be as visible.

Hard corners on cabinets and other furniture can injure and even killed a small child. These corners are everywhere in the home. They are probably most prevalent in the kitchen. Tables and other furniture have corners which if impacted could cause severe injury. A small impact driven by the Childs body weight can cause a concussion or worst. Preventing this type of injury is terrific, but it is only the beginning of your quest to eliminate dangers to your child.

Chemicals and other potential poisons are easily found all over your home. If left unsecured, they can be as lethal as a firearm. These chemicals naturally peak the interest of your the child. You use them daily and they come in brilliant colored containers which especially attract children. Many have child proof caps. The caps do little good if they are not properly closed. A child and these chemicals are a deadly combination. Chemicals, as do other hazards, pose a significant danger if they are left within the childs reach.

Glass items on lower levels may be broken by a child. Broken glass is an immediate hazard. Glass can quickly injure a child. It can sever major arteries and cause severe bleeding. If swallowed, glass can cause terrible pain and even death. Be aware of the items that small prying hands can break. You may find that a majority of your home hazards are in a particular area.

The kitchen is no place to play. Playing in the kitchen is potentially hazardous. There is heat, electrical appliances and other hazards. A pot boiling on the stove, if knocked over can be detrimental to a child. Activity in the kitchen is sometimes fast and furious. It is not a place for play time. Small children should be watched every waking moment. Without proper supervision routine activities can become deadly.

Never leave a child unattended in bath water. A child can drown in less than a minute. A few inches of water is enough to drown a child . Water can be as dangerous as poison. Children are naturally attracted to it. You should bathe small children in specially made tubs. Under no circumstances should a child ever be submerged.
